'High priest' in the Bible

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the court of the palace of the highpriest, named Caiaphas;

And, lo! one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the highpriest, and cut off his ear.

And they who seized Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

And the highpriest arose, and said to him, Dost thou make no answer to what these men testify against thee?

But Jesus was silent. And the highpriest answering said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

Then the highpriest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? See! ye have now heard the blasphemy.

how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the highpriest, and ate the showbread, which it is lawful for none but the priests to eat, and gave also to those who were with him?

And one of those who stood by drew his sword, and smote the servant of the highpriest, and cut off his ear.

And they led Jesus away to the highpriest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes come together.

And Peter followed him afar off, even into the court of the palace of the highpriest, and was sitting with the officers, and warming himself at the fire.

And the highpriest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Dost thou make no answer to what these men testify against thee?

But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the highpriest asked him, and saith to him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

Then the highpriest rent his garments, and said, What further need have we of witnesses?

And as Peter was below in the court, there cometh one of the maidservants of the highpriest;

And one of them smote the servant of the highpriest, and cut off his right ear.

And they seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the house of the highpriest. And Peter followed afar off.

And a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being highpriest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all;

And this he spoke not from himself; but being highpriest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation;

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and smote the servant of the highpriest, and cut off his right ear. And the servants name was Malchus.

and carried him to Annas first; for he was fatherinlaw of Caiaphas, who was highpriest that year.

And Simon Peter and the other disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was an acquaintance of the highpriest, and went with Jesus into the court of the palace of the highpriest.

But Peter was standing outside at the door. The other disciple therefore, who was an acquaintance of the highpriest, went out and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

The highpriest then asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.

And when he had said this, one of the officers who was standing by struck Jesus on the face, saying, Is it thus that thou answerest the highpriest?

Annas therefore sent him bound to Caiaphas the highpriest.

One of the servants of the highpriest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

and Annas the highpriest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the highpriest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

But the highpriest and all that were with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, rose up and were filled with indignation,

And hearing this, they went into the temple at daybreak and taught. But the highpriest and they that were with him came and called together the council, and all the elders of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

And having brought them, they set them before the council. And the highpriest questioned them,

And the highpriest said, Are then these things so?

But Saul, yet breathing out threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

as also the highpriest beareth me witness, and all the elderhood; from whom I received letters to the brethren, and was on my way to Damascus to bring those also that were there, bound, to Jerusalem, that they might be punished.

And the highpriest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

And they that stood by said, Dost thou revile Gods highpriest?

Then said Paul, I knew not, brethren, that he was highpriest; for it is written, "Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of thy people."

And after five days Ananias, the highpriest, came down with the elders and a certain orator named Tertullus; and they brought a complaint before the governor against Paul.

Whence it was right for him to be in all respects made like to his brethren, that he might become a merciful and faithful highpriest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the apostle and highpriest of our profession, Jesus;

Since, then, we have a great highpriest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

For we have not a highpriest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who hath in all points been tempted as we are, without sin.

For every highpriest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins;

Thus Christ did not glorify himself to be made highpriest, but he who said to him, "Thou art my Son, I this day have begotten thee;"

being addressed by God as highpriest after the order of Melchizedek.

where as forerunner for us Jesus entered, having become a highpriest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek.

For such a highpriest also became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Now the principal thing among those of which we are speaking is this: We have such a highpriest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

For every highpriest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; whence it is necessary that this one also have something which he may offer.

but into the second the highpriest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offereth for himself, and for the errors of the people;

But Christ having appeared, as a highpriest of the good things to come, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, entered once for all into the sanctuary,

Nor yet to make an offering of himself many times, as the highpriest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the highpriest are burned without the camp.
